Clare Menck's artistic trajectory spans over four decades, marked by critical acclaim and international recognition. In 2011, Stefan Hundt, curator of The Sanlam Art Collection, unveiled Menck's mid-career retrospective, 'Clare Menck: Hidden Life/Verborge Lewe; Twenty Years of Painting (1990-2010).' This comprehensive collection, accompanied by essays from esteemed scholars and art connoisseurs, toured major art centers and festivals nationwide, including notable venues like UJAG, William Humphreys Art Gallery, and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum.
The retrospective's global impact led to Menck's inclusion in the international all-women nude selfportraiture exhibition entitled 'Sie, Selbst, Nackt', at the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum in Germany, alongside celebrated artists like Marina Abramovic, Gwen John, Yoko Ono and Louise Bourgeois. Now, 14 years later, Menck unveils a selection of unseen works from the 'Hidden Life' archives, alongside newer personal pieces, at McGregor's Love Life Festival.
This exhibition is a testament to Menck's lifelong dedication to self-portraiture and autobiographical content, exploring themes of bisexuality, motherhood, and visceral sensuality. As a former pupil of renowned painter Edna Fourie, Menck's ties to McGregor add a poignant layer to this showcase of artistic evolution.
