ABOUT

NEW WAYS TO DREAM: CLOWNS, EPICS, UNCHAINED CAMERAS, & THE GIRL IN THE BLACK HELMET.

In Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical adaptation of Billy Wilder’s “Sunset Boulevard”, the aging silent star, Norma Desmond, proclaims: “We gave the world new ways to dream. Everyone needs new ways to dream.”

The pioneers of the silent cinema certainly gave humanity new ways to dream, for their inventiveness was boundless. The tragicomedy of Charlie Chaplin, the multi- faceted epics of D.W. Griffith, the experimental camerawork of F.W. Murnau and Abel Gance, the liberated womanhood of Louise Brooks — the innovators of the silent era expanded the possibilities of a young art and their genius still overawes movie-lovers today.

In his detailed homage to the greats of the early movies, DIGBY RICCI explores exactly why the silents really were golden. Join him for a fascinating and eye- opening presentation on silent cinema!
