St David's PTA Team Marist Champagnat Day Run/ Walk

PTA TEAM MARIST CHAMPAGNAT WALK/ RUN 2023

In 2020, during the first year of Covid lockdown, St David's launched the inaugural Champagnat Day  Run/Walk which invited our extended David's community from around the world to participate in a virtual run/ walk/ cycle as a way of staying connected during a time of disconnect. In 2021, we created Team Marist where the communities of all five of our South African Marist Schools participated in this event – again, from across the country and the globe. Each school organised their particular event in a way that best suited their school, with a combination of on-campus and virtual participation. The symbolic distance has been approximately 4,2km as this was the distance that St Marcellin Champagnat walked each day from his home to the first Marist school in LaValle, France. 

We are excited to announce that the Team Marist Champagnat Day Walk/ Run will take place again this year and we are delighted that the St David’s PTA have come on board to make the St David’s 2023 event more connected and even more fun this year. 

There will be three components to the event this year, including the on-campus (approx. 4,2km) run, the Inanda-Alex on-road run (approx. 10km and limited to 20 ‘elite’ runners) and the global virtual run. The Inanda-Alex Team will include parents from our Alex campus and the campus will be the half-way watering point along the route, with support from our Alex community. We hope to grow this aspect of the run in years to come. The 11 June is also the date of the Comrades Marathon so we will be joining in spirit and celebration with all our Marist Comrades runners – St Henry’s Marist will be hosting a support station at the Comrades so we will have representation there too! 

SUNDAY 11 JUNE 2023: ON-CAMPUS EVENT & INANDA-ALEX RUN

On-campus:            We invite our community to join us on-campus to complete their 4,2km run (or multiples of the loop). 

Time:                        08h00 – 10h30 (participants must start their run before 08h45)

Cost:                        R50/ participant – funds will be directed to the PTA

Inanda-Alex Run: This will constitute 20 runners from across our community - 5 staff, 5 boys, 5 Old Boys and 5 parents. Please let us know if you would like to be considered for this group. Runners are required to be able to run 10km in sub 60min. The group will run as a pack and this will not be a race for position. These places will be considered on a first-come basis and representative basis. Please contact Joe Kotwal if you would like to be considered – [email protected]

Time:                        08h15 – Our Inanda-Alex team will set off on their run 

09h30 – Approximate  time that we will welcome and cheer the Inanda-Alex Team back on the Inanda Campus. 

Cost:                        R50/ runner, but we will also be asking for donations/ sponsorships for these runners that will support St David’s Outreach projects. 

We will have refreshments on sale during the morning. 

VIRTUAL WALK/ RUN/ CYCLE 

Virtual Run:             We invite our broader Marist Community to participate from wherever they find themselves and to share their photos and Strava maps with us for us to share on our social media platforms. 

Time:                        This can be run at any time during Champagnat Week (3 – 11 June)
