THE HEYDEBURG CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

The Heydeburg Chamber Orchestra was started by Dr Leonard Heydenrych in 2008, after he completed his musical performance studies at the Royal College of Music and Trinity College of Music in London.

Dr Heydenrych is passionate about the development of the Arts and affording young musicians in the Western Cape the opportunity to polish their skills whilst earning an income.

During his time in London, he completed his corneal fellowship at Moorfields Hospital. He serves as the medical advisor to the Eyes2Eyes Foundation and is committed to improving access to life changing eye care for patients with preventable corneal blindness.

THE TYGERBERG CHILDREN'S CHOIR

Not to be missed! The Tygerberg Children's Choir has won every major international choral competition since it began in 1972!

Unsurpassed legato singing, maturity of sound, musical power and dynamic interpretation of difficult material makes the Tygerberg Children's Choir a formidable international competitor.

It's an honour to have them perform at this event, under the baton of conductor Karina Erasmus, just before they jet off to their next international performance, representing South Africa.

THE OUTENIQUA JAZZ BAND

The Outeniqua Jazz Band, led by Lynette Petersen, was formed in 2017 to fill a void in high school ensemble playing.

The students are all enthusiastic musicians who are constantly exploring the expressive possibilities of their respective instruments. The group has participated in the Makhanda Jazz Festival since its inception.

The band's goal is to bring together learners from all backgrounds, affording them the opportunity to learn about music and make music together.

With limited opportunities for musical development along the beautiful Garden Route, they have sezied the moment, putting together workshops and master classes to fill this gap. This close collaboration between renowned artists Ramon Alexander (composer & pianinst), Lionel Beukes (double bass & bass guitar), Annemie Nel (drums & percussion), and Byron Abrahams (saxophone & vocals), ensures students are geared up to perform on festival stages like the Makhanda Jazz Festival.

2022 was a special year for the band -  a year of many 1st's.  They won "Best Senior Ensemble" at the George Music Society's Young Musicians competition and opened the Makhanda National Youth Jazz Festival with an unforgettable program. Category awards were won at both the Tygerberg International Eisteddfod and the Stellenbosch University National Ensemble Competition.

The band performs regularly along the Garden Route, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share their talent with Cape Town at this fundraising event!
