ABOUT

Since his last concert at Christchurch, uber-saxophonist Andrew Young has performed in Europe; Croatia, Germany and Austria. From Schlossberg Castle (Germany) to Knie Circus (Austria), Andrew has wowed the audiences with his inimitable style of performance.

On Sunday 5th February 2023 at 3pm at Christ Church Constantia, Andrew Young and pianist/keyboardist Tony Drake present a programme entitled "Sounds of the 70's."

There was more variety in music in the 1970s than ever before. Music listeners had

dozens of genres to choose from and many of them rose to popularity at different points

during the decade. Funk, soul, R&B, pop, hard rock, soft rock and disco all carved out their place in the music world in the 1970s.

The 70's were a golden era for vinyl records. They were affordable to everyone and everyone had a record player.

For my show at Christchurch Constantia I have chosen some of the iconic songs of the 70's era to perform for you, including "Easy" by the Commodores, "September" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Paradise Road" by Joy, "Just My Imagination" by the Temptations, and "I'll Be There" by the Jacksons.

Andrew Young started his musical training in Liverpool at the age of eight with clarinet and saxophone lessons, but like most other lads his age, he would have rather have been playing football. Time spent in front of the goal posts was as crucial as time spent practicing his music and even after leaving school he was still torn between a career in football or music! After completing his saxophone and clarinet studies in London, Andrew moved to Germany to pursue a desire for a broader and more eclectic involvement in all genres of music.

Andrew has spent his life traveling the world with his saxophones with tours to Europe, Turkey, Caribbean, Far East, South America & South Africa. He has performed for Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, the President of Austria Mr Heinz Fisher, and presidents Nelson Mandela & Fidel Castro.

He has performed with Joseph Shabalala, Jonathan Butler, Shakatak, Dame Shirley Bassey, Sir James Galway, Keith Washington, Dionne Warwick, the Buena Vista Social Club and Spyro Gyra.

Andrew was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for Services to Music by Vienna University, presented to him by Otto Von Habsburg (Archduke of Austria) and the Standard Bank Ovation Awards at the 2019 & 2020 National Arts Festival, Grahamstown.

His numerous albums (1994 - 2020) include Soul People, Magic Life, A Christmas Album, One II One, Touched to Tell, Live In Vienna, In A Quiet Moment, Sax, Blues & Rock ’n Roll, Bright Blue, Reminiscing, Diamonds, Easy Street and The Collection

The China Daily Mail calls him the "Prince of the Saxophone"

The Saxophone Journal USA describes him as a "A saxophonist with a ton of technique and funky soulfulness"
