Bat evening at the Kloofendal Nature Reserve

Sat Oct 22, 16:30 - Sat Oct 22, 20:00

Kloofendal Nature Reserve

ABOUT

Join the Gauteng Bat Interest group and Friends Of Kloofendal for a bat evening. The evening will consist of the following:

  • A presentation on Bats and their importance in nature and to us humans.
  • A presentation on Echolocation - how the bats can locate their prey (insects) by echolocation, how they produce the sounds at a very high frequency which we can’t even hear, but a special bat sound detector can lower the frequency so that we can hear and identify them.

At sunset, guests are taken outside to see the bats come out of their sleeping spots, and see how bats are caught in the special bat catching nets. If any bats are caught, they are carefully taken out and put into a bat bag, where they relax. After bats are caught, the bat handlers show the bats to the guests, who can touch them and feed them. All bats will be released.

This is a great family event.
