ABOUT

Mozart, Lieder, and the Afrikaans art song.

With great anticipation Thomas Erlank (tenor) and Pieter Grobler (pianist) will share a program of arias, songs, and new music from the pen of a South African composer on the 2nd of August in Potchefstroom at the Conservatory's concert hall. The program is designed to share something from the distant past, but also something of our contemporary composition world. The two arias Dies Bildniss and Fuor del Mar are two of Mozart's most famous tenor roles, Tamino & Idomeneo. The Zauberflöte (1781) and Idomeneo (1791) both took up place in the yearly repertoire of many opera houses around the world. Schubert composed Schwanengesang in 1828 while struggling with serious health problems, almost as a prophecy of what fate would hold for him. Quilter's three Shakespeare songs are about life and love, and the selection of works by Franco Prinsloo is the intimate setting of Afrikaans texts. The program will undoubtedly take the audience on a journey through the musical ages.
