Die Dans Van My Heenkoms (The Dance of My Origin) examines iterations of the dance-work, Bolero, over four decades of South African history. By witnessing the evolution of this distinctive choreographic work, the film tells the story of contemporary dance as the expression of successive struggles for emancipation. Through the narration of leading choreographer, Alfred Hinkel, the film tells the ongoing story of South African contemporary dance as liberation from its received colonial forms, to the embodiment of the multiple and intersecting cultural layers of South African dance expressions. Shadowing the slow accumulation of Ravel’s musical composition, Die Dans Van My Heenkoms, explores how contemporary dance mirrors South Africa’s emancipatory destiny.
