Join Captain Fanplastic & the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation in the Plastic Pirate course for Grade 5 learners!

About this Event

Captain Fanplastic is part of the new School of Sustainable Development; which has been created to raise literacy on the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and encourage conscious behaviour change in young learners across the world.

The goal is to contribute to the realisation of the UN’s 2030 SDG targets.

In this course Captain Fanplastic will facilitate the Plastic Pirate module linked to Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water). Children will be contributing to reducing marine pollution from land-based activities including single use and microplastics (14.1).

The 2 day course is broken into two sessions as follows:

Session 1: Saturday, 15 May 2021, 10:00 to 11:00: Theory

Session 2: Saturday 22 May 2021, 10:00 to 11:00: Applied Learning

  • Positive reinforcement: Aquarium Foundation to share success stories of rehabilitated turtles. Time: 10 mins.

Conclusion: Q&A with Action on Plastic Pollution Interception

  • Introduce take home challenge: family activity - your family is challenged to go on a treasure hunt at a local park, river or beach and collect as much plastic "treasure" as possible.
  • Reward: Post your collection online, tag Captain Fanplastic on Facebook (@CaptainFanplastic) or Instagram (@Captain_Fanplastic) to earn incentives and discounts for learning materials.

Overall, from this SDG module children will learn about what plastic and plastic pollution is and the impact it has on our marine environment. It focuses on the value of plastic, when it is reused or repurposed appropriately.

Research has shown that experiential education linked to the environment increases enthusiasm for learning.
